British Environment Secretary Launches New Waste Strategy

The British Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove published the policy paper Resources and waste strategy for England in December last year. Gove’s aim is to completely modify the waste system and reduce plastic packaging.

Tax for the use of plastics

The manufacturers of plastic packaging are at risk of paying the full costs of the waste of the plastic packaging they produce. Moreover, the government will support households to recycle their waste. The recycle system of plastic bottles will be improved.

Gove is considering levying a tax on plastic packaging that does not meet the minimum requirement of 30% recycled material starting from April 2022. This should reduce the use of newly produced plastic and encourage using recycled plastic.

Future goals

Michael Gove stated that his government aspires to a leading position when it comes to recycling and using resources that do not damage the environment.

Gove said: “Our strategy sets out how we will go further and faster, to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Together we can move away from being a ‘throw-away’ society, to one that looks at waste as a valuable resource. We will cut our reliance on single-use plastics, end confusion over household recycling, tackle the problem of packaging by making polluters pay, and end the economic, environmental and moral scandal that is food waste. Through this plan we will cement our place as a world leader in resource efficiency, leaving our environment in a better state than we inherited it.”

According to financial analysis, these changes will produce revenue for the United Kingdom’s economy.
